The Soulless are the dirty little secret of the Detyen diaspora. Drex is one: a fugitive from the inevitable soulless death sentence, he's hiding out as a landscaping maintenance worker on a remote space station. Pippa is a lowly engineering tech on the same station. A near-death accident with a malfunctioning incinerator brings them together, setting in motion two high-stakes story lines. The first, a desperate and forbidden romance, could out Drex's soulless status and cost him his life. The second is a gruesomely escalating chain of murders and attacks on the low-status females aboard the station. Solving the crimes while protecting each other is a priority for Drex and Pippa, second only to staying alive long enough to find love. The action is fierce, the dramatic tension is through the roof, and the romance is desperately heartwarming. I nearly chewed off my fake nails reading this one, but I loved every suspense-filled minute. Those who like their romance flavored with adrenaline will love this first-in-series thriller by Kate Rudolph. This is a voluntary, independentm, manicure-mangled ARC review.
